Jalandhar, June 25, 2016: Lovely Professional University has framed a ‘Free Education’ policy to ease the financial burden that so often comes along on an individual with Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). From this session (2016-17) onwards, LPU has come forward to provide 100% scholarship to students affected with spinal cord injuries. In first instance, seven such students have already joined LPU. They were invited at the campus and awarded scholarships by the Chief Guest of the occasion, Police Commissioner of Jalandhar Division Mr Arpit Shukla, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal & Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal. Commissioner Shukla addressed the SCI affected students as real heroes and great source of inspiration for others. He also said: “I praise LPU open-heartedly for taking a noble initiative which is sure to be followed by others. We always depend on Government resources; however, it’s our own duty to come forward and help each other and the society.”

SCI affected students will not only have total fee waiver but free hostel accommodation and food also. Moreover, special ramps will also be constructed outside the classrooms and hostels where they have to join their classes and stay. In addition, their spouses & children can also avail 50% scholarship at LPU. Seven students who have got admission at LPU this session are Pooja Sharma who has taken admission in MSc IT; Sagar Pal in MBA; Mahima in BEd; Neha Walia in BSc (Airlines, Tourism and Hotel Management); Danishbir Singh in BTech Computer Science; Ajeya Raj in MSc IT; and, Darshana in BSc IT. More of such students from different states are also enrolling at LPU. On this occasion, a physiotherapy camp was also organized at University Hospital where 30+ people were treated generously. LPU Chancellor Mr Mittal also bestowed 3 wheel chairs to the needy persons.

Applauding the buoyant-spirit of affected students who want to pursue education at LPU, Chancellor Mr Mittal informed: “Our University extends the largest private scholarship scheme to students on various parameters so that they may not be devoid of quality education in any respect. LPU wants that SCI affected students must also think big and have a proud existence in the society. All healthy persons should learn from them how to live with optimism in a challenging life. I also want to share that a few days back we had promised to provide free education to SCI affected students. On these lines, a due policy has been set in working form with totally free education to 7 disabled students, in first instance.”

Illustrative, only one and a half month back two-day Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Conference ‘Vistaar’ was organized at LPU which sensitized society and different agencies to adopt stringent measures in preventing such injuries to happen. Near 150 persons with spine-injuries assembled at the campus, and had one to one interaction with experts from related fields for their betterment and better future. On this occasion, many wheelchairs were also distributed to make them live active life of mobility and self-dependence.
