Ludhiana, September 20, 2016: ‘In some cases of High blood pressure complaint, it is not necessary to take medicine for life long. Sometimes, High Blood Pressure can be caused by such factors which can be easily treated through a miniature surgery and give patient medicine free comfortable life with normal blood pressure’ said Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh (Professor of Urology and Head of Transplant Department), DMCH, Ludhiana.
Such a alarming condition was recently detected in a 8-years old child who was not able to focus in his studies with frequent episodes of severe headache. Consultation with local physician at Patiala found that his blood pressure was very high and was put on medication.
After undergoing a number of tests, the ultrasound report of patient showed abnormally small kidney on the left side, known as Renal hypoplasia in medical terms. Blood vessels of both the kidneys were studied with help of angiography which showed two blood vessels on both sides with severe narrowing of vessel on left side. This problem on the left kidney of patient seemed to be a cause of hypertension. Parents then approached Department of Urology and consulted Dr Baldev Singh Aulakh for his son’s treatment. After reviewing his medical records, Dr Aulakh diagnosed that abnormally small-size left kidney was cause of hypertension and could irreversibly damage heart, eyes and other kidney. It was decided to laparoscopicaly remove the diseased kidney after informed consent from the parents. A suvvessful miniature surgery was done and left kidney was removed. Child was discharged on third post-operative day. Further elaborating, Dr Aulakh informed that only 4 pencil point incision was given in this surgery through which camera and instruments were inserted in kidney and kidney was separated from other organs and removed through same tiny holes. This minimal invasive surgery enabled the child to be discharged early and attend to his routine schedule much earlier as opposed to open surgery where child is bed ridden for atleast a week.
Dr Aulakh said that other causes of hypertension including kidney cancer, conn’s syndrome, cushing disease can also be cured with miniature surgeries
Early signs to consult urologist where timely intervention can save the child:
1. FITS
2. SEVERE HEADACHE
3. RECURRENT INFECTION IN URINE
4. URINE LEAKAGE
