Chandigarh, March 27, 2015: Women, Child Development and Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani today advocated the concept of Joint family system as against the nuclear families for a health and well conceived socio-cultural fabric. The interaction of the children with the elderly members of the family was lacking in modern day families which has caused the emotional and social imbalance in our society.
Addressing a massive gathering after inaugurating one day National seminar on “Domestic and Gender based Violence against Women” jointly organised by Punjab State Women Commission and National Commission for Women, New Delhi, Jayani has called upon the social, religious and non-government organisations to join hands in eliminating crime against women from the society. He said that women should not be treated as an object rather they should be respected and honored as taught by our saints and seers. He said that complete transformation of the male mindset was required so as to give respectable place to women in society.
Jayani said that it is apt that Punjab State Women Commission was organising this seminar on the day of Durga Ashtami when every Indian is supposed to worship women in the form of Goddess. He said that time has come that women should understand their inherent powers, strengthen themselves and face the perpetuators of crime and domestic violence in befitting manner. He said that Ma Durga crushed Asuras and similarly modern day durgas should crush the feelings of asuras in modern men.
Speaking on the occasion Chief Parliamentary Secretary, N.K. Sharma, also expressed concern at the rise in suicide cases by young men and women. He said that lack of proper counseling by the elders and experienced members of the families was the main cause of such suicides. He said that the state government recruited 3200 lady constables besides appointed lady officers in the police station so that the women could easily open up with the women officers. The state government has also set up 2500 suvidha kendras and 181 toll free number facility for women have also been launched where complaints could be registered and redressed within a short time span. He also said that the adequate value based education was the need of an hour and the male child should be taught the first lesson of respecting women from home only. He also said that social aberrations such as dowry, drug abuse and craze for a male child should come to an end for an educated, healthy and developed society. He also asked men in general to change their mind set so as to accept woman as an integral part of the ethos.
Inspector General Police (Crime) Vibhu Raj said that Punjab police was committed to eliminate crime against women from the society. She said that the SSPs across the state have been directed to personally monitor the cases of crime against women. Five women Police Stations at Amritsar, Jalandhar, Patiala, Ludhiana and Bathinda have been set up to facilitate women. She also said that to protect women from any crime, adequate police personnel have been deployed in plain clothes at public places.
Earlier in her welcome address, Chairperson Punjab State Women Commission, Paramjit Kaur Landran, said that the commission had received more than 266 complaints in the months of January and February out of which 127 have been resolved. She informed that Commission had also chalked out a special drive to educate women about protection from domestic violence. She also announced that Commission was in the process of launching a special drive in April to resolve the issues pertaining to women of border areas. She said the commission would visit the border belt of the state where cases relating to women issues would be examined on the spot besides initiating necessary action.
Prominent amongst others who expressed their views on the occasion included Dr. Paramjit Kaur, Principal Sidhwan College, Additional Session Judge T.T.S.Bindra, Additional Advocate General, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Amarjeet Kaur Khurana, Chairpersons of state Women Commissions from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttranchal and Vice Chairperson Bibi Satvir Kaur Manhera.
