Jalandhar, February 20, 2016: Postgraduate Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of Doaba College Jalandhar organised two days International conference on Mother Tongue, Regional Languages and Societies. Dr.Kanchan Malik-Department of Communication, University of Hyderabad graced the occasion as Key speaker, Dr.Jaishree Jethvani-Indian Institute of Mass Communication University of Hyderabad as guest of Honour, Sh. Chander Mohan-Eminent Journalist and President College Managing Committee as Chief Guest, Dr. Sarbjit Singh-Dept. of Languages and Agricultural Journalism, PAU Ludhiana, Dr. Happy Jeji-Dept. of JMC Punjabi University Patiala as guests.
Dr. Kanchan Malik while delivering her keynote address said that India is a multi-cultural country is a home to 1652 mother tongue and about 780 dialects. The interesting fact is that there is not a single Indian language i.e. spoken across the length and breadth of India. Language diversity requires utmost planning and care because many languages are becoming and endangered; with 196 of its languages listed as endangered India top UNESCO list of countries having maximum number of dialects on the verge of extinction.
Dr. Jaishree Jethvani said that “it is sad that in the modern globalized and capitalist world the language is meddled with and crushed, It is important that we should use the colloquial language to maintain diversity. Community radio and Doordarshan is playing positive role by transmitting various programmes in regional and local dialects to different regions in order to bind country in to single unit.
Chief Guest Sh. Chander Mohan said, “We should create, develop and propagate a link language in order to maintain our diversity and Hindi language can be a befitting solution for this purpose. It is only Hindi language which will never crush local dialects and regional languages, so we all should realize the relevance of Hindi to promote diversity.”
In the first day 20 research scholars in the Punjab and Haryana presented their research papers. Principal Dr. Naresh Kumar Dhiman, Sh. Chander Mohan and Dr. Simran Sidhu presented memento to Dr. Kanchan, Dr. Jaishree, Dr. Sarbjeet Singh , Dr Happy, Dr. Ranbir, Prajnay, Des Raj Kali on the occasion. Nearly 200 students were present.
