IIHMR Bangalore in association with Narayana Health and CMHS of IIM-Ahmedabadset to bring innovations in health management education

Bangalore, November 20, 2016: Indian Institute Health Management and Research, Narayana Health and Centre for Management of Health Services of IIM-Ahmedabad have come together to bring innovation in health management education space through joint research and collaboration.

To start with, the three hosted the International Conference to improve the overall healthcare delivery system in primary, secondary and tertiary care. The institute has chalked out a long term association which would help build capacity to address the growing need of the healthcare industry. Narayana Health would actively contribute in this initiative by providing resources and IIM Ahmedabad will share their expertise.

Healthcare management is of supreme importance for running a hospital and ensuring a fault-free functioning. The healthcare sector is rife with inefficiencies, erratic quality, unequal access, and sky-high costs, complex problems which call for innovative solutions. India's hospitals are in need of skilled healthcare managers, IIHMR, an institute that trains students in healthcare management, along with Narayana Health will work towards introducing innovations in health management education in India. This announcement was made during the two-day national healthcare conference conducted by the Institute of Healthcare Management and Research (IIHMR).

Dr Biranchi Jena, Director, IIHMR Bangalore, said, “Health Management education and training is a bit critical compared to the general management education. It needs a thorough understanding of medical and clinical protocols, standards along with the service delivery models. Since hospital industry is growing around 35% CAGR, we need to rope in industry partners and support the understanding of such business transitions.” He added, “Narayana Health has been a continuous support to bring innovations in health care education in Karnataka in particular and in India in general.”

Commenting on the concerns of the industry Dr Devi Prasad Shetty, Chairman and Founder, Narayana Health, said the medical education has to liberate to bring in more healthcare professionals. India needs more post graduates in medicine, as we currently have only 14,500 post-graduates seats for the 56,000 undergraduates. He also alarmed that the nursing profession will die soon if there no policy changes made to enhance the career of nurses. Currently they join as nurses and retire as senior nurses and their role does not change.”

Expressing his happiness on the joint efforts which aims at bringing transformation in health management education in India Dr. S.D. Gupta, Chairman, IIHMR University said, “We have always strived towards improving the standards of health through better management of healthcare and institutional networking at the national and global levels. These associations would further allow us to build capacity in the healthcare segment and cement our reputation as a reputed education provider.”

Prof. Arnab K Laha, Chairperson, CHMS, IIM - Ahmedabad said “In India, affordability and access to quality healthcare has been a challenge. Hence we are willing to collaborate with like minded Institutes to overcome the challenges. The role of analytics and technology will go a long way in help solve this problem.
