Talwandi Sabo, January 28, 2018: The Guru Kashi University (GKU) held its second Convocation today wherein 410 students received degree of various courses including 10 Ph.D. degrees, 54 M.Phil degrees 109 post graduate degrees and 237 graduate degrees. A total of nine students were awarded Gold Medals for their meritorious performance in their education programs. Eminent agricultural economist & policy planner, Dr. Sardara Singh Johl, Chancellor of Central University of Punjab was the Chief Guest. The Chancellor of GKU, Dr.J.S.Dhaliwal presided over the event.
In his address, Dr.Johl congratulated those who received degrees and awards. Dr Johl called upon the students to be tomorrows’ responsible citizens and contribute responsibly to nation building. He appreciated the programs being run by the GKU. He said that diligence, humility and positive attitude were vital ingredients for success. He advised the students to keep their ears and eyes open towards what is happening around in society. He said that the participation of youth in prevailing social-political system of the country was desirable to give a constructive feedback.
The GKU Chancellor, Dr. J.S. Dhaliwal congratulated the degree awardees and gold medal recipients adding that the University reorients and reprioritise its programs to make these need based and relevant to the emerging corporate needs. He said that emphasis is being laid on developing skills among youth so that rather than being job seekers, our students turn out to be job creators.
The GKU Chairman S. Gurlabh Singh Sidhu and Vice Chancellor & President of Crandall University, New Brunswick, Canada were the Guests of Honour while the GKU Secretary Er. Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu and Dr. Jagjot Singh Sidhu (Member PCI) were special guests.
Dr. B. S. Dhaliwal, Vice Chancellor highlighted the educational, research and other accomplishments of GKU. He asked the students to stay in touch with their Alma mater. The dignitaries were honoured with the presentation of mementos and shawls.
Professor Shiv O Prasher of McGill University, Montreal, Canada, who has developed research based technologies for soil and water management, scavenging soil of toxic chemicals, antibiotics and hormones using innovative technologies, ameliorating green house gases and developing technologies for eco- friendly management of soil and water resources, was conferred with the Degree of Doctor of Science ( Honorius Causa). After receiving the degree Dr. Prasher said that the land and water of Punjab suffer critically from abrotic stresses for which the collaboration between his team and GKU can be advantageous.
The team of academic experts from the Crandall University, Canada led by Dr. Brue Fawcett deliberated on the start of joint educational programs and faculty exchange programs between GKU and Crandall University. Those who participated in the deliberation were Dr. Jon Ohlhauser (Provost ), Mr. Greg Cook (Chair, Board of Governors) , Mr. Shan Padda (Law Experts) of Crandall University, S. Gurlabh Singh Sidhu (Chairman, GKU), S. Sukhraj Singh Sidhu (Managing Director, GKU), Vice Chancellor Dr. B.S. Dhaliwal, Prof. Jagpal Singh (Pro Vice Chancellor, GKU), Registrar Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman, Prof. Ashwani Sethi and others to develop modalities of articulating .
The Academic procession was led by the Registrar Dr. Jagtar Singh Dhiman who read out the Citation of the awardees of honorary degrees. The Dean and Directors, Controller of Examination and officers of the University graced the procession.
The University Campus was tastefully decorated to receive the old students, dignitaries from India and abroad. With this, the occasion provided a nostalgic get-together of the old students.
