Dr. B.S. Chahal, Coordinator of this project said that Apple is the premier table fruit of the world and in India the states like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pardesh and Uttaranchal have achieved distinction in the cultivation of apple. But these states could not meet the growing demand of apple in the Indian markets. Moreover apple cultivation from lower hills has shifted to the high hills because of the rise in temperature.

Talwandi Sabo, October 13, 2014: Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo has introduced two Tropical varieties of Apple namely ANNA and DORSET. The sapling has been supplied by NEAUVA Plantation free of cost to the GKU in the Public Interest. These varieties have been under testing since January 2014. Till date the performance of the varieties at GKU Research Farm is excellent and there is no sign of leaf scorching and nutrient deficiency symptoms. These two varieties have chilling requirement less than 300 hours, which is most suited to our environment. The performance of the plantation is being studied with the help of Solar Radiation Resource Assessment Cum Advance Metrology Lab in association with M.N.R.E. Govt. of India.

Dr.

Indian Government has also stepped up efforts to save the apple economy and low chilling varieties have been introduced which are suitable not only for lower hills but also for plains; where traditionally apple is not grown. These varieties require very low chilling hours (less than 300 hours) as compared with traditional varieties which have high chilling requirement between 800-1500 hours.

Dr. N.S.Malhi, Vice Chancellor of GKU appreciated the efforts of Dean Agriculture Dr. Ajmer Singh Sidhu and Dr. Bhagwant Singh Chahal (Horticulturist) for this project. This will bring a revolution in fruit cultivation of Punjab, he added.

Sukhraj Singh Sidhu, Managing Director, GKU lauded the efforts of Agriculture Scientists and stated that the production of Tropical Apple in this belt will definitely give positive effect on the economic aspects of the state. This will also lead to cope with the requirement of apples in the country.
