Fusion of rusted nuts, bolts and inimitable style marks Shears & Ruban at PU

Chandigarh, April 17, 2015: An impressive and inimitable annual design collection of University Institute of Fashion Technology (UIFT), Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh was showcased amidst applause and admiration at PU Law Auditorium on Friday.

PU annual design collection, ‘Shears and Ruban’ is a ritualistic production of original and creative work by masters degree students of UIFT & VD, presented after months of hard work and toil by them. As the design collection was revealed onstage, the 2014-15 batch of students incontestably lived up to the benchmark set by previous year’s student-designers.

"My collection was a random portmanteau of moods and emotions. I have designed it to suit the purpose of a Friday wear. The best part of the collection is its surface ornamentation which can be done by using creative techniques like patch work, appliqué work, cut work among others," said Reetika, an MSc student who showcased her collection titled Raw Edges.

Yet another collection titled Death by the Mexican shores was based on Mexican festival describing the day of death. I got inspired by this Mexican concept of spirit and the soul. The costumes have been designed on that theme, added Vidhi Goyal, an MSc student.

PU Dean Student Welfare (Women) Prof Nandita Singh and DSW Prof Navdeep Goyal were the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively.

Students of MSc (Fashion & Lifestyle Technology) are graded on the basis of their collection, an attempt by the department to let practical knowledge and exposure prepare them for the industry, said Dr. Sween, Co-ordinator, UIFT & VD. University faculty and students from various disciplines were present to cheer UIFT designers.

Dr. Prabhdip Brar, UIFT faculty and coordinator of Shears and Ruban added, Student efforts have been tremendous in putting together this unique collection. The originality of design collection- costumes, furniture and projects, as well as the confidence among students truly stands out.

RESULTS- Annual Design Collection

The Jury Special award was bagged by

1)    Reetika for her design collection titled ‘Raw Edges’

2)    Amneet Kaur for her research project ‘Recycleate Brim’

The Best Concept design collection award was again bagged by

1)    Parneet Kaur for ‘Persephone’

2)    Manpreet Kaur for ‘Biker Bride’.

Most Creative collection was again taken away by:

1)    Arushi Ahuja for her design collection titled ‘Rock and Rust’ and

2)    Aroona for her design project ‘Bee-ginning’

The best design collection went to Shailja Khosla for her collection titled ‘Aaina’.
