DMC doctor elected as President of NZAPSI

Ludhiana, September 10, 2012: Dr Sanjeev Uppal (Professor and Head of Plastic Surgery) was recently elected as President of North Zone Association of Plastic Surgeons of India (NZAPSI).

After getting elected as the President of NZAPSI, Dr Uppal emphasised that the association will make a dedicated effort to improve reconstructive plastic surgery and burns outcomes through education, research, and the maintenance of high surgical standards of clinical practice.

He said that the association will make a fervent appeal to the state government to provide facilities for reconstructive plastic surgery and burns care in all civil hospitals of the state.

Elaborating about the benefits of reconstructive plastic surgery, Dr Uppal said that `Reconstructive Surgery’ is usually performed to correct facial and body abnormalities caused by birth defects, trauma, disease, post cancer surgery or aging. It also includes a variety of fields: craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, burn surgery, microsurgery, and paediatric surgery. There are many parents who seek surgery for their children who are born with birth defects but due to high cost of treatment, it becomes difficult for them to avail the benefits of reconstructive surgery. In addition to correcting birth defects and other abnormalities, reconstructive plastic surgery is also used to treat accident victims who may get a crushed bone or a detached limb. Burn victims too undergo reconstructive surgery to repair their scar tissue and deformities.
