Chandigarh, April 22, 2015: Department of Life Long Learning & Extension (DLLL&E), Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh today organized Major Jiwan Tewari Memorial Lecture on the theme of “Challenges of Higher Education in India”. 

As many as125 students and faculty members of the different departments of PU attended the program. 

Delivering Major Jiwan Tewari Memorial Lecture, the Chairperson of Centre for International Politics Organization and Disarmament, JNU, New Delhi, Prof. Swaran Singh said natural resources; equity and efficiency; integration and fragmentation; learning and teaching; ‘transformation and generating knowledge’ and ‘balance between autonomy

and accountability’ are the six challenges in higher education in India.  This could be done by providing equality or balancing to women Education, distribution of women in various professional courses and providing balance between autonomy and accountability.  

While inaugurating the “Major Jiwan Tewari Memorial Lecture” PU Vice-Chancellor, Prof.Arun Kumar Grover said that 21st centaury faced many challenges with relation to Higher Education.  The education system has to be vocationalized and technological advanced which provides lifelong learning jobs to the youth.  

While welcoming the chief guests, resource person and participants Chairperson, DLLL&E, Renu Gandhi said that with the blessing of Major Jiwan Tewari, who was a founder of Centre for Continuing Education in 1977 which has now become a full fledged department in the name of Life Long Learning & Extension.  The Department has now having extension

programs for the minority and weaker section of the society like; Women Education,  Computer Literacy, Swach Abhiyan , Life skill & Environment Education, First Aid and Home Nursing in the adopted villages of Chandigarh namely Khuda Lahora, Dadu Majra,Dhanas, Sarangpur and Behlena. 

PU, Fellow, Shri G.K. Chatrath  while remembering Major Jiwan Tewari expressed that he and Major Jiwan Tewari had put their best efforts to make the University in the form it would be.  He was a dedicated, committed educationist in the University, who promoted women education, NCC and NSS in India. 

PU Fellow Prof. Rupinder Tewari proposed a vote of thanks to the department, faculty members and students, who paid tributes to Major Jiwan Tewari by paying attention to the valuable suggestions given by the Key Resources Person with relation to higher education system. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
