Ludhiana, October 1, 2015: The Communist Party of India Ludhiana has expressed deep grief and shock at the repeated incidents of health hazards including deaths of sewer workers because of lack of safety kits when they go down in the gutters. Incident at the Hambaran Road ward No.2 on 29th September 2015 where two sewer workers Sohan Lal and Surinder Kumar got unconscious while cleaning the sewer without safety kits and had to be hospitalized, is a  matter of deep concern and reflection of uncaring attitude of the concerned authorities. In a statement released here Com D P Maur, Dr Arun Mitra – Assistant Secretaries of the district unit of the CPI and Com Ramesh Rattan city Secretary said that this is a total violation of Human rights and dignity particularly of the workers engaged in the sewerage cleaning work. It is pertinent to note that the Supreme Court of India had issued directive that no person should be asked to go down in the sewer manhole without proper mask and safety kit. It has also been directed that the concerned official should be punished if he fails to comply with this. But this is being violated by the municipal corporation Ludhiana with impunity.
In a communication to the Commissioner Municipal Corporation Ludhiana the CPI has demanded that  the corporation should provide and  ensure the use of masks and safety equipment by the sewer workers and also take action against the erring officials as per the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.
