Communal radio is  a powerful medium of positive social change: Anju Nigam
Dharamsala, October 24, 2018: Anju Nigam, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, today inaugurated Community Radio Awareness Workshop in Dharamsala,Himachal. She said, “The communal radio is a powerful medium of positive social change. The medium is playing a big role in connecting communities and educating people about the subjects they are interested in.” She underlined the role that community radio which can give importance to the voice of villagers and unprivileged people and said that this medium has helped in the promotion of cultural heritage. This workshop is being organized by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India from 24 to 26 October at Dharamsala for awareness regarding community radio. In this three-day workshop, representatives from nearly 40 institutions, as well as the current community radio operators and who wish to establish community radio from Himachal Pradesh ,Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand are participating. Community Radio Station of Dharamsala is a local collaborator of this workshop. Referring to the bright future of community radio, Anju Nigam said that currently 238 community radio is running in different provinces of the country and about 200 more applications are in line for setting up community radio, which shall become operational as soon as the formalities will be completed. She said that community radio is opened with a purpose. It is also important for the Government of India to raise awareness about the government's plans for the people in the districts across the country having the need of special help and efforts in terms of development. Urging the participants to ask all the questions related to the establishment and operation of community radio without hesitation, she said that this workshop would be meaningful by reducing their doubts. Information and Broadcasting Secretary Ajay Joshi gave information about the process required for the establishment of community radio.
