CMC Hospital launches Artificial Limb Center at Hambran
Ludhiana, October 14, 2018: Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana today added another feather to its cap as the CMC’s administration assembled at the Mata Kaushalya Devi Pahwa Charitable Hospital, a unit of CMC Ludhiana to inaugurate the Artificial Limb Center (ALC) set up by Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PMR) department which is now ready to provide state of art services to the disabled persons. The ALC was inaugurated today by honorable chief guest; Officer on Special Duty, to CM – Damandeep Singh and the ceremony was chaired by Dr. William Bhatti, Director of CMC & Onkar Singh Pahwa; CMD of Avon Cycles. Madhi from Christoffel-Blindenmission, Karan Vaid and village Sarpanch were also present among other dignitaries. Dr. William Bhatti, congratulated the PMR department for this project and said that an ALC is place for provision of aids and appliances that can help persons with disabilities to live a proud, independent and joyous life. Braces and crutches can be provided to help children with loco motor disabilities to walk without assistance from parents or caregivers. Artificial legs such as below knee and above knee prostheses will allow amputees to walk. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Rohit, Assistant professor at PMR department said, we hope that with the establishment of ALC at Hambran, large number of disabled patients will benefit from its services. Walking aids will allow severely disabled children to go to school independently. Spinal braces can be provided which will prevent and correct deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis. Specialized footwear and insoles designed with modern technology can help in healing of foot ulcers in diabetics and will also prevent such ulcers from recurring. The requirement for treatment and rehabilitation services for persons with disabilities in this region is very high and not only such services are lacking but also a majority of the population can’t afford these devices, said Prakash who has come for Chennai and will be making these artificial limbs at ALC, Hambran. Shedding light on today’s event Dr. Santosh, Head of the department at PMR, said, ALC is well equipped to provide upper and lower limb prostheses, calipers and braces, canes, crutches, walkers are available for disabled patients an affordable price. Customized cervical and lumbar corsets, Sternal-Occipital-Mandibular Immobilizer (SOMI), Knight Taylors (braces required for patients with spinal injuries) and scoliosis braces will also be available at a reasonable price. He further added that the department is also planning to start bachelor course in Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) so that more students can be trained in O&P technology and quality aids and appliances may be provided to disabled persons at a lower price.
