The mega event to be held at Sukhna Lake from 27th-30th June

Chandigarh, June 20, 2018: The Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association (IKCA) in association with Haryana Kayaking & Canoeing Association (HKCA), Chandigarh Kayaking & Canoeing Association (CKCA) and Punjab University today made the announcement of organizing the Senior National Championship & Federation Cup (Traditional Boat Race, Canoe Polo and Canoe Marathon) at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh from 27th to 30th June, 2018.

 

The four-day championship will commence on 27th June at the scenic Sukhna Lake and honorable Governor of Haryana Dr.Kaptan Singh Solanki will inaugurate the event the same day.

 

In this championship more than  750+ men and women athletes and officials from 26 state & U.T. associations of Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, J&K, M.P., Manipur, Maharashtra, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Telangana, Gujrat, West Bengal etc. along with teams from The Indian Army (SSCB), The Indian Navy, CRPF and The Armed Border Force, will participate. Present on the occasion were Shri. S Raghunathan, (Retd. IAS) Life President, IKCA, Shri. Prashant Kushwaha, Secretary-General, IKCA, Shri. Vashist Kumar Goyal, Working President, HKCA, and Shri. Parminder Singh, Director of Sports, Panjab University & President CKCA.

                                                                                                               

Addressing the press, Shri. S Raghunathan, said, “We are extremely happy to be hosting this event in Chandigarh; it will be a big canoe events fate here! It feels great to share that our decision of holding the tournament in Chandigarh has received a positive response and is welcomed by all. Through such events, we not only want to encourage water games but also provide a platform to budding sportsmen who will get an opportunity and will be attracted towards the game. Kayaking and Canoeing are Olympic and Asian Game Events! We have 16 gold medals in them, 12 in Canoe sprint and 4 in Canoe Slalom. The Indian team is under vigorous coaching for preparation of forthcoming Asian Games. We are very much hope to get few medals in Asian Games, 2018.”

Considering its great infrastructure, modern facilities and connectivity to the location from the adjoining states, we included the city to host this major sports event. We are proud to be hosting a national level championship, with more than 750 players participating, in the beautiful city of Chandigarh. This event will help players to showcase and enhance their skills and talent. IKCAs aim is to provide a boost to water sports as India is blessed with natural water bodies and we will do our best to promote and popularize this fascinating sports discipline to national and international level.” said Shri. The Organizing Committee will provide free lodging, boarding, local transport, and logistics arrangement for all participants and officials.

In Dragon /Traditional Boat Race (10+2) races of 200, 500 and 2000 meters for Men, Women, and Mixed (Men & Women) will be conducted.
