Ludhiana, February 28, 2016: “Science has given us insight to differentiate between myths, believes and the factual position of the events occurring around us in an analytical manner. Charles Darwin through his discoveries reached conclusion that the life on earth has evolved through a complex process; it has not been created by any unknown power. Different communities in different parts of the world in the absence of any concrete evidence have different beliefs about creation and existence of life on earth. Many a times these beliefs became cause of conflict in different regions. But it was during the period of renaissance about 700 years back that philosophy is developed which made the man to think about the causes of the events occurring around and to find evidence for these. But it was not easy because the forces which had strengthened those beliefs and myths would not give up so easily. Those who challenge had to face great difficulties in life. Challenging the prevalent beliefs Galileo and Copernicus told that the earth is not flat but it is round and revolves around the sun. For this they had to suffer wrath of the rulers and the believers.” These words were said by Dr. Rajinder Pal Singh Aulakh, Secretary Bharat Jan Gyan Vigyan Jatha (BJGVJ) District Ludhiana at Malwa Central College of Education for Women where a function was organized to observe National Science Day. The programme started with shabad recital. Shri Ranjit Singh Vice-President BJGVJ apprised the students about the life and work of the first Indian Nobel Lauriat C.V. Raman. A declamation contest on the theme ‘How Science has changed my outlook to life’ was organized. Eight students participated in the contest. Ketal bagged - First, Harsimran Kaur – Second and Jagriti – Third position. Important Scientific facts were shared by Kanika Miglani and Navdeep Kaur. To sensitize the audience about the wastage of natural resources and their conservation, a power point presentation on ‘Save Planet’ was given by Taranpreet Kaur. Maj.( Retd) Sher Singh Aulakh-President of Jatha asked the students to observe the things and take analytical decisions based on their observation and not accept the things as they are told to them. He lauded role of Jatha in creating awareness about science and environment in the public in general and in students in particular. Addressing the students Mr. M.S.Bhatia, Organising Secretary - BJGVJ said that taking clue from the life sciences the social scientists found that the present man – the Homo Sapiens took birth in Africa and from their they migrated to rest of the world. Through their labour the human race developed in different fields from the ancient period to the present day development. The ancient man thought the natural events like the rain, fire, floods, earthquakes etc to be because of some super power. But now we know the causes of these events. Similarly we know the causes and management of several diseases.Social sciences are even a bigger challenge because my interests are involved who would not accept the changes due to the fear of losing the power hierarchy. They indulge in insiting communities against each other even today. There is a constant effort by a section to propagate myths and to mix with science. He also said that the inventions of science have proved the equality of men and women. Firm belief in science requires lot of courage, conviction and steadfastness. A skit was also presented by science students to showcase the value of science in day to day life. Dr. Naginder Kaur, Principal of the college presided over the function. The organizers of the function were Dr. Mandeep Kaur and Ms. Rajdeep Kaur.
