Acid attacks make society, women insecure: Delhi court

New Delhi, July 8 (IANS) Acid attacks create a feeling of "insecurity" among members of the society especially women, a city court observed while sentencing a man to seven years in jail for throwing acid on his lover.

Additional Sessions Judge Pawan Kumar Jain jailed 34-year-old Delhi man Parmod for causing grievous hurt to the woman.

"The act of throwing acid in itself is an inhuman act. Such incidents create a feeling of insecurity among members of society especially among females and society abhors such cases," the court said in its order delivered Saturday and which was made available Tuesday.

"Parmod had thrown acid on the body of a person whom he loved in the past. There was no immediate instigation of any kind from the victim," the court said, slapping a fine of Rs.50,000 against the man.

The amount should be given to the woman as compensation, the court said.

The court also directed the Delhi government to bear all expenses of the victim's medical treatment, including plastic surgery, saying it was the state's duty to make all efforts to remove every scar of the incident from her body.

It added that since the man was waiting for the victim with acid, it proved that the offence was premeditated.

The victim sustained grievous injuries from neck to her lower leg and still has acid burn marks, it said.

According to the prosecution, Parmod threw acid on the victim's back April 19, 2012, when the woman was returning home from office.

The woman also complained that the convict threatened to disfigure her face by throwing acid on her three months before the incident after she objected to his misbehaviour.

A police case was filed against Parmod and he was arrested the next day.
