Chandigarh, April 26, 2018: Punjab BJP President Shwait Malik today lambasted Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh for the deplorable condition of the farmers in the state. Coming down heavily on the state government, Malik said that the Congress should be more worried about saving the farmers of Punjab, rather than playing to the gallery and misleading the people by launching campaigns like ‘Save the Constitution’.

Mounting an offensive on the state government, Malik said, “452 farmers in Punjab have committed suicide during the 408-day-rule of the Congress in the state. The government, which came into power under the false premise of waiving off crop loans to the tune of Rs. 90,000 crore, is rubbing salt into the wounds of the farmers by waiving off farm debts worth few crore and issuing loan waiver certificates”.

“As if this was not enough, a loading tax on wheat bags is being imposed in Mandis across the state. Wheat bags are piling up across all the Mandis in the state while the tax collectors are making hay owing to the weak policy of the state government. The government seems to be interested in slow lifting of the bags as it wants to encourage such tax collections”, alleged Malik.

Cornering his Congress counterpart, Malik said, “Canals in southern Punjab, which happens to be the area of Congress MP Sunil Kumar Jakhar, are dry as they haven’t been cleaned. When the Akali-BJP government was in power, Jakhar used to shed crocodile tears by regularly issuing statements on the condition of the farmers. Now the farmers of this area have taken to the streets and are cleaning the canals by collecting money amongst them”.

Warning that dried up and unclean canals will affect cotton plantation, Malik said that the whitefly pest threat will also loom large in the forthcoming days. “If the Capt. Amarinder Singh government does not wake up to these problems, the BJP will take along the farmers and launch a stir”, cautioned Malik.
