Two widows indulge into illegal trade of liquor; 2 others arrested

Two accused with the recovered liquor in police custody at Ludhiana.

Ludhiana, July 20, 2013: Two widows have been arrested by the local police for allegedly indulging into illegal trade of liquor in the city.

Police have confiscated a total ten cartons of liquor bottles from these two women identified as Oosey (48) and Raj Rani (50). According to Harbans Singh, In-charge, Anti Narcotics Staff and anti Liquor Smuggling Staff, Ludhiana, poor economic conditions led these two widows to enter into the illegal trade of liquor.

The liquor cartons were recovered from the houses of these two widows. They failed to show permit of liquor stored in their houses following which they were arrested under the Excise Act. These women were arrested for the first time. They told the police that they used to buy liquor at a cheaper rate, stored it in their houses and then sold liquor at a higher rate.

In another case, a juice vendor identified as Dharminder Kumar (31) has been arrested under the Excise Act. A total six cartons of liquor have been recovered from him. He has been running a juice shop on Gill Road here. He was apprehended when he was transporting the liquor cartons on a rickshaw-rehra from Shimlapuri to Dholewal. Police said the accused was on his way to supply the liquor. The accused used to buy liquor from a vend in Goraya and sell it at a higher price under the “garb” of running a juice shop.

Still, in another case, police have recovered 15 cartons of liquor from Sukhwinder Singh Lamba, alias Sachin (30). Two cartons of liquor were recovered at a naka laid near Jalandhar Bypass and and the remaining 13 cartons of liquor were recovered from house of the accused. He too has been booked and arrested under the Excise act.

Further police investigation is in progress.
