Chandigarh, March 15, 2016: Education Minister Dr.Daljit Singh Cheema extended gratitude towards Finance Minister, Punjab Mr.Parminder Singh Dhindsa for making special provisions for education in the annual budget for 2016-17, which was presented today in Punjab Assembly.
In a press communiqué released here, Dr. Cheema said that the budgetary allocation of Rs.8732 crore has been earmarked in the Punjab Annual Budget. This welcome step would go a long way in imparting the qualitative and competitive education to the students of the state. He said that announcement to start a new scheme ‘Swathya Kanya Yojana’ has also made in this progressive budget to encourage the girl child for education. Education Minister further said that under this scheme, girl students of 1st to 12th standards would be supplied stationery and school bags free of cost, for this Rs.70 crore has been put aside in the budget. Besides this, provision has also been made to provide ‘Kanya Sehat Sambhal Kits’ free of cost on monthly basis to the girl students from 6th to 12th standards.
The Education Minister said that Rs.225 crore has also been earmarked for the up-gradation of 800 government schools. Under this project, 400 middle schools would be upgraded to high schools and 400 high schools would be upgraded to senior secondary schools. He said that a new Channel ‘Vidya TV’ would also be launched on cable to impart education through multimedia techniques. For the Meritorious schools, budget of Rs.120 crore has been earmarked whereas for the resuscitation of the school infrastructure budgetary allocation of Rs.100 crore has been made. He said that under the ICT project to impart computer education to students from 6th to 12th standards, layout of Rs.410 and for Vocational Education Program Rs.100 crore has been made in budget.
