Thailand's Pheu Thai Party expects to face ban

Bangkok, June 25 (IANS) The Pheu Thai Party, which was major coalition party in previous government, is facing the prospect of being banned by the junta rulers, media reported Wednesday.

The party is accused of having connection with an anti-coup organisation, Organization of Free Thais for Human Rights and Democracy, newly-founded by Charupong Ruangsuwan, a former Thai interior minister, who is believed to be in self-imposed exile, Bangkok Post reported.

A party source said its key figures have assessed the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) and wants to end the colour-coded political divide.

The source also said that dissolving political parties may be part of the junta's mission.

The source added the Election Commission (EC) has received several complaints seeking the dissolution of the party.

The party was founded by the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2008.
