Sway to earthy moves of folk dancers at Surajkund Mela

Faridabad (Haryana),February 12,2014 :Vibrant folk dance forms bring Surajkund International Crafts Mela alive. The Mela offer a golden opportunity to everyone to watch the folk dances of India up-close for an entire fortnight. The folk dance troupes from across the country look forward to be a part of this Mela and their fascinating performances at Chaupal and Natyashala are so popular that onlookers jostle to find space to catch a glimpse of the performers. On Tuesday evening, folk performers of different states of India entertained audience at Natyashala.
The most fascinating and enthralling performance of the Mela has been from Gujarat’s Sidhi Dhamal group sponsored by Western Zonal Cultural Centre. Siddi Mustaq Ahmad, an artiste of the group that has performed across the globe, says, “Our dance form starts very slowly and then it picks up speed. All the performers are predecessors of ‘Afrikeners’, who came 800 years back to India. Our history is mentioned in historical book containing around 7,000 pages.” They are an action-packed group, who want to perform every single minute for the audience.
Dance troupe from Bihar sponsored by Northern Central Zonal Cultural Centre has been presenting dance forms like Jhijhia, Jharni, Kamla Puja, to name a few. Says artiste Jitendra Kumar, “At Surajkund Mela, we definitely get a great platform to showcase our talent. Also it offers a great interface between dance forms of the world and coming here has been surely a learning experience for us.”
North Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre’s dance troupe from Tripura has been performing at the Mela. Says artiste Komal Mog, “Our performances at Surajkund Mela make us popular and we are extended a special treatment. We usually perform during winter seasons and our dance keeps us warm and snug.” Harendra Nath Kumar, who specialises in Purulia Chhau dance form of West Bengal at the Mela, says, “Our dance form is unique and no one can copy us. Our dance keeps us on the move and it feels good to be a part of Surajkund Mela, as we receive recognition for our dance forms. The youngsters here watch our dances from close quarters and appreciate it.”
Goa’s dancer Mahendra Faldesai has been performing various dances forms at the Mela like Tarang Mel, Goph & Lamp dance and has performed in Russia, London, Hong Kong and Kuwait. “Back home, we perform our dance during Shigmo festival (Holi). Surajkund Mela has given us an opportunity to meet international dance troupes and also we get inspiration from foreign dance steps.”
