Ludhiana, June 29, 2016: According to Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), the cultivation of summer moong has been very successful during 2016. In Punjab, summer moong was cultivated on a nearly 60,000 hectares of area. Due to protection from unseasonal rains in May and June, summer moong gave a good yield. In 2016, PAU also organized field demonstrations at farmers’ fields and during this, moong gave a yield of 5q/acre. Some farmers, after potato cultivation, got the yield of 7-8 q/acre. The farmers have earned good profit from summer moong cultivation this year, which was sold at approximately Rs 6000 per quintal in the mandi.
Summer moong, being rich in proteins, is an important part of human diet. Its cultivation plays a key role in improving the soil health. It is cultivated during Rabi as well as Kharifseason. In Punjab, farmers cultivate this crop mostly duringRabi season due to less attack of insect-pests and more yield. Summer moong sown during March 20 to April 10 yields better. The timely sowing of this crop results in protection from unseasonal rains and insect-pests attack (like whitefly).
