Chandigarh, October 2, 2014: Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal today greeted Indian Hockey team for their tremendous victory over Pakistan and becoming Asian champion by securing gold medal after 16 years in Asian games at Incheon in South Korea.

Extending congratulations to the hockey team Badal said we are proud of them as they not only demonstrated wonderful game with all the hard work and efforts to beat their rival team. The Deputy CM, who is also holding the sports portfolio added that Indian Hockey team led by Sardara Singh has brought great laurels to the nation after 16 years and proved their mettle by giving a befitting answer.

Appreciating the game played by Indian team including captain Sardara Singh, Rupinderpal Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Akashdeep Singh, Dharmvir Singh, Gurbhaj Singh, Gurwinder Singh Chandi and Manpreet Singh (all from Punjab), Badal said this victory has brought two celebrations since besides clinching victory the Indian team secured berth for Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics. Lauding the role of Punjabi players in securing the shootout goals for this victory, Badal said that “we all should feel proud that the Indian team led by Sardara Singh, which had 7 players from the state.”

He said that the SAD-BJP Government was paying full attention towards the promotion of sports by strengthening the sports infrastructure besides providing world class sports facilities in centers of excellence.  He said that Punjab Government has boosted up the standard of hockey playing by laying six new Astroturfs.

Badal also announced that Punjab Government would hounor the winners of commonwealth games and Asian games after the closing of these games.
