Special Lecture on “Srimanta Sankardeva: The Persona and the Milieu”
The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, in collaboration with the Srimanta Sankardev Chair, organised a special lecture on the theme “Srimanta Sankardeva: The Persona and the Milieu.” The lecture was delivered by Prof. Satyakam Borthakur, Deptt. Of Assamese, Dibrugarh University, Assam.
Chandigarh, March 18, 2026: The Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, in collaboration with the Srimanta Sankardev Chair, organised a special lecture on the theme “Srimanta Sankardeva: The Persona and the Milieu.” The lecture was delivered by Prof. Satyakam Borthakur, Deptt. Of Assamese, Dibrugarh University, Assam.
The event brought together scholars, students, and faculty members to engage in a meaningful exploration of the life, philosophy, and socio-cultural contributions of the great saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva.
The lecture aimed to highlight Sankardeva’s multifaceted personality as a spiritual leader, social reformer, poet, and cultural icon, as well as to contextualize his work within the socio-political and cultural milieu of his time. The distinguished speaker for the session elaborated on Sankardeva’s enduring legacy in promoting values of unity, devotion, and social harmony through the Neo-Vaishnavite movement.
In the inaugural remarks, the Head of the Department Professor Manish Sharma, emphasised the relevance of Sankardeva’s teachings in contemporary times, particularly in fostering peace, inclusivity, and ethical living. The speaker further underscored how Sankardeva’s contributions to literature, art, and community life continue to inspire generations across India.
Prof. Satyakam also highlighted the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi and Srimanta Sankardeva’s ideas in today’s globalized world and discussed the rich heritage of Assam along with the history of literacy development in the state.
The lecture was followed by an interactive session, where participants actively engaged with the speaker, raising insightful questions and reflections. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the speaker, organisers, and attendees for making the program a success.
