Reunited with Global Hockey Superstar Floris Jan Bovelander After 23 Years

Some meetings are far more than just memorable photographs; they become unforgettable chapters of life. My reunion with Dutch hockey legend and penalty-corner specialist Floris Jan Bovelander after a gap of 23 years was one such extraordinary experience.
The story dates back to August 22, 2003, when the 25th Silver Jubilee Champions Trophy was being played at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amsterdam, Netherlands. On that memorable day, India defeated Pakistan 7–4 in a thrilling encounter, registering a remarkable victory.
At that time, I was in the Netherlands representing the Punjabi newspaper Ajit, covering this prestigious international hockey tournament.
The Indian victory over Pakistan created tremendous excitement among the Indian and Punjabi communities. Celebrations erupted everywhere. People were dancing Bhangra, distributing happiness and celebrating India's magnificent performance with great enthusiasm.
After leaving the media centre following the match, we found ourselves facing another challenge. It was raining heavily, and our car was parked nearly two kilometres away. It was already 11 p.m., and we were wondering how to reach our vehicle in such terrible weather.
Suddenly, an unfamiliar gentleman approached us. He understood our difficulty and immediately offered to help. Without any hesitation, he invited us into his car and dropped us near the parking area where our vehicle was parked.
Before leaving, he introduced himself as Dutch hockey player Floris Jan Bovelander. He simply remarked that the Indian hockey team had played exceptionally well that day and then departed.
We were astonished when we realised who this gentleman actually was. He was none other than one of the greatest stars in world hockey, a player who revolutionised penalty-corner scoring and introduced a new era of drag-flick excellence in international hockey.
Bovelander played a significant role in the Netherlands' triumph at the 1990 Hockey World Cup in Lahore. He was also instrumental in the Netherlands winning the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. The Dutch team had earlier secured silver at the 1994 World Cup, along with several other outstanding international achievements.
What impressed me most was not merely his extraordinary hockey career but his remarkable humility. Despite being a global superstar, he displayed the simplicity and generosity of a saintly person. I have always compared his personality to that of a humble saint or fakir.
That night of August 22, 2003, has remained permanently etched in my memory.
Now, after 23 years, destiny provided another opportunity to meet this legendary personality.
On November 4, 2026, I got an opportunity to watch the Asian Champions Trophy hockey matches in Chandigarh with renowned hockey enthusiast and DIG Gurpreet Singh Toor.
On reaching the venue, we were warmly welcomed by Navdeep Gill, Public Relations Officer and Deputy Director with the Punjab Government. We regard Navdeep Gill as a worthy successor to our generation of sports journalism. He is himself a passionate sports lover and extended wonderful hospitality to us. He arranged our passes and personally welcomed us at the venue.
As soon as we entered, Navdeep Gill introduced us to the legendary hockey personality Floris Jan Bovelander.
We exchanged greetings, photographs were taken and old memories came alive once again.
I reminded Bovelander that we had met him during the 2003 Champions Trophy in the Netherlands. I also recalled how, on that rainy night, he had personally driven us in his car and dropped us near our parked vehicle.
To my pleasant surprise, he immediately recognised the incident and responded with a smile:
"Yes, I know, we met!"
Those few words brought back the entire unforgettable episode of 2003. The old memories of the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen, one of the iconic venues of world hockey, came rushing back.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is also a great admirer of Floris Jan Bovelander. On the other hand, Bovelander himself has enormous affection and admiration for Punjab and the Punjabi hockey-loving community.
Some sports personalities win the world through their achievements, but very few win people's hearts through their simplicity, kindness and humility.
Floris Jan Bovelander is undoubtedly one of those rare personalities.
Twenty-three years ago, he helped us on a rainy night without expecting anything in return. Meeting him again on November 4, 2026, brought back that beautiful memory and reminded me that greatness is not measured only by medals, records or international recognition, but also by the humanity and humility a person carries.
My second meeting with this legendary hockey superstar after 23 years will remain one of the most treasured memories of my life, until my last breath.
