Our Satluj river, Harike wetland, Kali and Chitti Baeni major sources of biodiversity in Punjab are facing serious threat from Polluted waters flowing in from Nangal  factory and many other industries. Punjab needs immediate attention as for as forest cover is concerned because only less than 3 percent forest  cover has been left  in the state. Similarly,  once upon a time Buddha Nala of Ludhiana was a major source of Bio diversity, with 200-250 animal and plant species, however, these have already disappeared due to the polluted water from industries. The Satluj river is also facing the same problem from the polluted water of Nangal factories. According to the American study, Global warming and Mass deforestation is major threat to plant and animal species . After 30 years we will be left with only 5% species. During the last decade we have lost 38, 502 animal and plant species.  This was expressed by Dr. Jagbir Professor, Zoology Department , Punjabi University, Patiala on the occasion on Bio-Diversity Day at Science City.
While introducing the participants to the need of biodiversity conservation, Dr. Rajesh Grover, Director, Pushpa Gujral Science City on the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity-2014 said that Biodiversity is a wealth to which no value can be put. India, a mega diverse nation, is one of the richest nations in terms of biological diversity. Biodiversity is fundamental to the existence of life on Earth and the importance of it cannot be underestimated. In the past few centuries, humans have had negative affect on biodiversity, although, in general, are now becoming more aware of its role. However, due to the damage we have caused, and the value that biodiversity has to us as humans, protection of the natural environment is necessary.
