Rajinder Singh, Director, Akal Psychiatry Services-cum-drug De-addiction and rehabilitation centres, Baru Sahib, H.P. and Cheema, Punjab. Prevention is the best treatment of drug addiction which is a chronic relapsing brain disorder that causes a person to take the drugs repeatedly despite the harm they cause, says Dr (Col) Rajinder Singh, 90-year-old psychiatrist and social worker who has been voluntarily treating patients of drug addiction at two drug de-addiction centres being run under the aegis of The Kalgidhar Trust, Baru Sahib. More than 11,000 families have benefitted after treatment at two drug de-addiction centres so far.

Dr. Bhavneet  Bhatti, Co-ordinator, Radio Jyotirgamaya 91.2  and Chairperson,  School of Communication Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh presented a token of respect to Dr. Rajinder Singh and appreciated his presence by looking forward to more such informative sessions.

Dr Rajinder talked about incorporation of spirituality into the treatment plan that fills the voids that the addicts might be trying to fill with drugs or alcohol. This is one of the important aspects of the holistic treatment being provided to the addicts at the de-addiction centres being run by the trust. While professional clinics, rehab centres, and mutual help groups are doing their job, quality books on the addiction and recovery also offer much help. Dr Rajinder Singh has also edited and authored two books on drugs, ‘Drug Addiction’ and ‘Be Aware Beware of Drugs’.
