The fifth day of the internship programme, students of the Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, gained practical exposure to the emerging challenges of cybercrime and digital investigations through specialized sessions conducted by Chandigarh Police.

Chandigarh, July 6, 2026: The fifth day of the internship programme, students of the Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, gained practical exposure to the emerging challenges of cybercrime and digital investigations through specialized sessions conducted by Chandigarh Police.
Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration, PU, stated that cybercrime has emerged as one of the fastest-growing forms of crime in today’s digital society. He emphasized that understanding cyber threats, investigation procedures, challenges, and preventive strategies is essential for students of Police Administration, as cyber policing has become an integral component of modern law enforcement.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Recruit Training Centre (RTC), and Inspector Poonam Dilawari, (CLI), RTC, briefed the students on the changing nature of crime with the rapid advancement of information and communication technology. They highlighted the increasing importance of cyber policing and stressed the need for technical expertise, digital awareness, and continuous capacity building to effectively combat cyber offences.
As part of the programme, the students visited the Cyber Police Station, Sector 17, Chandigarh, where they gained first-hand exposure to the functioning of cyber crime investigations and the procedures adopted for handling digital offences.
Amit Gupta, Cyber Crime Expert, delivered an insightful session on the modus operandi adopted by cyber criminals in offences such as phishing, online banking frauds, investment scams, digital arrest frauds, impersonation, mule accounts, and other cyber-enabled crimes. He explained that fear, lack of awareness, and greed are the primary factors exploited by cyber criminals to target victims. He also demonstrated the functioning of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and explained the procedure for lodging cyber crime complaints.
The students further visited the Centre for Cyber Operations and Security (CenCOPS), Sector 18, Chandigarh, where Devanshu, Cyber Crime Expert, explained the role of CenCOPS in supporting cybercrime investigations. He elaborated on the forensic examination of digital devices, collection and analysis of digital evidence, and the use of digital footprints in corroborating criminal investigations.
Both experts also sensitized the students to essential cyber safety practices and preventive measures that individuals should adopt to ensure the secure use of digital platforms and protect themselves from evolving cyber threats.
The sessions proved to be highly informative and enriching, providing students with valuable experiential learning by integrating conceptual understanding, procedural knowledge, and practical exposure to cyber crime investigation, digital forensics, and cyber crime prevention.
