Prof Sandeep Verma selected for Bhagyatara Award-2014

Chandigarh, November 6, 2015: Shri Deva Raj Chair Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, IIT Kanpur Prof Sandeep Verma has been selected for the prestigious Bhagyatara Award-2014. Prof Verma would receive the award on November 9 at Chemistry Auditorium, PU.
The award is given every year by Panjab University (PU) for research in the area of Organic Chemistry/Biochemistry/ Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Dairy Chemistry and the selected Awardee gets Rs. 50,000/- . The Awardee is selected on the basis of the merit of his/her research work evaluated by a panel of Experts from among the Nominations received from different Universities/Research Institutes form all over India.
Prof Sandeep Verma would deliver the Bhagyatara Award Lecture on the topic of ‘Complex Bioinspired Systems in Imaging and Disease Modeling’ on November 9 at Chemistry Auditorium, PU. PU Vice Chancellor, Prof Arun Kumar Grover would preside over the lecture.
Prof. Verma is a recipient of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in Chemical Sciences (2010), DAE-SRC Outstanding Investigator Award (2012), Ranbaxy Research Award in Pharmaceutical Sciences (2013) and J C Bose National Fellowship (2013). He is an elected Fellow of Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) and Royal Society of Chemistry (UK). He also serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Chemistry & Biology (Cell Press), Chemical Communications (RSC, UK) and Journal of Peptide Science (Wiley) and serves as an Associate Editor of Journal of Chemical Sciences (Springer).
Prof Sandeep Verma obtained Ph.D. in synthetic medicinal chemistry from University of Illinois Medical Center in 1994. He subsequently held postdoctoral positions at the Johns Hopkins University Medical Institutions, Baltimore, USA, and Max-Planck-Institute for Experimental Medicine, Göttingen, Germany, prior to joining IIT Kanpur in 1997. He also occupies Adjunct Professor position at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal and National Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhubaneswar. His research interests include peptide/protein assemblies for disease modeling, bioinspired soft materials, and bioimaging. 
The “Panjab University Bhagyatara Award” is awarded annually by the PU to an outstanding scientist, who has made significant contribution in the areas of Organic Chemistry/Biochemistry/Pharmaceutical Chemistry/Dairy Chemistry. Well known Scientists like Dr. K.N.Ganesh (NCL, Pune), Dr. Santanu Bhattacharya (IISc, Bangalore), Prof. S.Kotha (IIT, Mumbai), Prof. Subodh Kumar (GNDU, Amritsar), Prof. V.K. Singh (IIT, Kanpur) Prof. Ashwini Nangia (Central University, Hyderabad) and Prof. G.J. Sanjayan (NCL Pune) have earlier received the award. / (SK Vyas, Jalandhar)
