Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill honored with Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Award by Sikh Educational Society in Chandigarh

Ludhiana, November 27, 2021: The Sikh Educational Society (Regd), which manages school and college institutions in Chandigarh, Banga and Kadian today honoured Punjabi Writer and the Chairman of Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy- Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill with the Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Memorial Award for the year 2021.

This award was established in the memory of Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra, former president, SGPC and Sikh leader. The award is given annually to two such eminent personalities who bring significant contribution in Sikh religion, society, Punjabiat or any other important field.

Col Jasmer Singh Bala (Retd.), Secretary, Sikh Educational Society, said that the award includes commemorative certification, a shawl and a token cash prize of rupees One lakh.

Keeping in view  the robust and dedicated services  of Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill for propagation of Punjabi literature and culture, the decision to present this award was taken under the chairmanship of Mr. Gurdev Singh IAS (Retd), president of Sikh Educational Society.

The award giving function was held at Sardar Hari Singh Nalva Hall of Shri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh today morning.

While thanking the Sikh Educational Society for bestowing this honour today, Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill shared his moments spent with Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra. He said that Jathedar Tohra was the true son of Punjab, who always stood for safeguarding the rights of Punjabis.

Prof Gurbhajan Singh Gill remained President of Punjabi Sahitya Akademi Ludhiana from 2010 to 2014.Besides having been an active executive of Prof. Mohan Singh Foundation  since 1978 he has been instrumental in organizing the rural sports  at Qila Raipur, Gujjarwal (Ludhiana) and played an active role in organizing  Kamaljit Memorial Sports at Kotla Shahia (Gurdaspur) from  time to time.

Prof Gill was the Senior Editor at the Punjab Agricultural University from April 30, 1983 to May 31, 2013. Prior to this he taught at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha and Lajpat Rai Memorial College, Jagraon (Ludhiana) for over 6 years. After retiring from Punjab Agriculture University, he also served as Director (Planning and Development) at Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo (Bathinda) for some time.

Gurbhajan Gill's poems ‘Shisha Jhoot Bolda Hai’ (Poetry anthology ), ‘Har Dhukhda Pind Mera Hai’ (Gazals), ‘Surakh Samundar’-‘Do Harf Rasidi (Gazals), ‘Agan Katha (Poetry anthology), ‘Mann De Buhei  Baarian (Ghazals), ‘Dharti  Naad’(Poetry anthology),’Khair Panja Panian Di’(poetry about Hind-Pak relations),’Fulan Di Jhanjar’(Songs ). ‘Paardarshi’(Poetry) .’Mor Pankh’(Gazals), ‘Man Tandoor’(Poetry ) and  acompilation of gazals Talking to the stars’ published by  Sulakhan Sarhaddi .’Gulnar’ (Gazals)), Mirgavali (Ghazals).Besides this a Coffee Table Book  ‘Patte Patte Likhi Ivarat’(103 couplets about nature) with elegant picture photography  by Tej Partap Singh Sandhu has already been published recently.While his effort for  giving us a in a singularly first attempt book ‘Camrei Di Akh Boldi’ about environment was already published in the year 1999.
 
Currently, he is  a Chairman of Maharaja Duleep Singh Memorial Trust, Bassian-Raikot (Ludhiana), S. Sobha Singh Memorial Foundation- Sri Hargobindpur (Gurdaspur), Olympian Surjit Sports Association, Batala and Punjabi Lok Virasat Academy. All these organizations are promoting Punjabiyat and Punjabi language relentlessly.
