Poor Post Leprosy Patient With Critical Heart Disease Urgently Needs Help

Ludhiana, March 28, 2017: Mr Sanjeev Nand (name changed) – a post leprosy beggar – resident of Anand Dham, Kusht Ashram, Ferozpur was in a difficult situation. His wife – Mrs Sudha Devi (name changed) suffered a massive heart attack and was referred to the Cardiac Care Centre of the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital , Ludhiana . Here she was immediately managed by a team of superspecialists . Dr Harinder Singh Bedi – Chairman Cardiac Sciences – told that on investigation it was found that Mrs Veena was suffering from a severe blockage of all 3 heart arteries and was in imminent danger of a further heart attack. Dr Bedi who has earlier worked in cardiac surgery in the St Vincents Hospital Sydney – said that ladies nowadays are not immune to heart disease . What he had seen 20 years back in Australia ie rising trend of heart disease in women – is being seen now in India too. However he has not earlier treated heart patients with leprosy . His team is trying to find out if there is a connection between leprosy infection and heart disease . Both Mrs Sudha and her husband have been treated completely for leprosy and do not pose a risk of infection to anyone else . Psychological factors associated with the stigma of leprosy can play a part .
Mr Sanjeev has meagre financial resources and would not be able to meet even the subsidised charges . He is a resident of a Kusht Ashram and earns money by begging as he is unable to work . He is now in need of monetary help . The hospital and its Heart Team is already helping the patient with monetary help .
