PAU VC hails dissemination of CRM technologies and provision of quality SSP fertilizer to farmers

Ludhiana, May 19, 2023: Taking a stock of the research and extension activities, Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), lauded extension scientists for playing a pivotal role in the dissemination of Crop Residue Management (CRM) technologies through trainings, demonstrations, farmer-scientists’ interfaces, Kisan Melas, campaigns, literature, mass and social media. The major PAU recommended technologies, comprising Happy Seeder, paddy straw mulcher, cutter-cum-spreader, zero-till seed-cum-fertilizer drill, reversible MB plough, rotavator, Super Seeder, Smart Seeder, Baler, etc. have descended the number of farm fires in Punjab, he added. Super Seeder technology was being practiced by farmers in large number and number of Super Seeder machinery was also increasing, he said at the 20th Extension Council meet.

Dr AS Dhatt, Director of Research, told that extension specialists created awareness on good agricultural practices such as drip irrigation, light and frequent irrigations, spray of KNO3 and salicylic acid, wind belts, shade nets and mulching practices, mulching, wind breaks, etc. as it saved the orchards from heat stress. Paddy straw as mulch has already been recommended in pear, peach and plum orchards, he said.

Dr GS Buttar, Director of Extension Education, while welcoming the senior officials and extension scientists of PAU, informed that special concern was expressed over the quality of Single Super Phosphate (SSP), being manufactured by the Indian companies. It was reported that the good quality SSP fertilizer was made available to the farmers through quality control campaign of fertilizers in all the districts of Punjab. Out of 52 samples of SSP, taken during 2022-23, 25 samples were found to be substandard and suitable action was initiated against the violators as per the provision of Fertilizer Control Order 1985, he added.

The meet was attended by the scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendras, Farm Advisory Service Centres and Directorate of Extension Education, PAU.
