PAU Student Ashok Babadev Jagtap Gets Prime Minister's Fellowship

Ludhiana, June 28, 2016: Ashok Babadev Jagtap, a Ph.D. student of School of Agricultural Biotechnology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been awarded the prestigious “Prime Minister’s Fellowship” for doctoral research. He is doing his research on the topic “Identification and characterization of high temperature stress responsive genes in maize (Zea mays L.).” He is one of the 13 candidates, selected by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU and Dr H.S. Dhaliwal, Dean, College of Agriculture congratulated the student for bringing laurels to PAU.
The Dean, Postgraduate Studies said that Mr Jagtap is the third candidate from PAU to have bagged the Prime Minister’s Fellowship during this year.
Dr R. K. Gumber, Director, School of Agricultural Biotechnology, said that it is an honour for the University and would be a step forward towards strengthening the linkages between educational institutes and industry.
Dr Yogesh Vikal, Senior Geneticist, School of Agricultural Biotechnology and Major Advisor of Mr Jagtap, said that scholarship would be jointly sponsored by the Maxim Crop Sciences Private Limited, Aurangabad (Maharashtra) and the government. His part of research work would be carried out at Purdue University, USA under the guidance of Dr G.S. Johal, he told. “The Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme is a public-private-partnership initiative for human resource capacity building for industrial research and development. It is an esteemed national fellowship to bring industry, government and academics on one platform,” he said.
