Ludhiana, May 11, 2016: Dr G.S.Makkar, Assistant Entomologist (Rice Section), Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has been conferred with the “Achiever Award 2015” in recognition of his outstanding contributions to agriculture extension and research. In addition, he has also been awarded life membership of the Honorary Board and authorship of the society. The award has been bestowed upon the PAU scientist by the Society for Advancement of Human and Nature (SADHNA) of Dr Y.S.Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan.

Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU; Dr Balwinder Singh, Director of Research and Dr K.S. Thind, Head, Plant Breeding and Genetics congratulated Dr Makkar for this achievement.

A PAU alumnus, Dr Makkar has been involved in the testing of various technologies, out of which, 16 recommendations have been included in the Package of Practices, PAU. He has 17 GenBank (NCBI, USA) gene accessions to his credit. He has also handled a research-cum-extension project on “Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in Paddy and Basmati” in collaboration with the Department of Plant Pathology. The project was funded by National Centre for IPM, New Delhi. Besides, he has made an immense contribution to the agricultural extension by conducting 62 trainings on IPM technologies, 11 vocational trainings and delivering 137 invited lectures at the district/block level camps. In addition, he has been instrumental in conducting 90 technology demonstrations, 32 adaptive research trials, 16 on-farm trials and 27 technical surveys. He has also delivered six TV talks, one radio talk and participated in 87 farmers’ training camps. Dr Makkar has published 10 research papers in national and international journals, and 44 extension articles, 16 extension bulletins, two training manuals and two newsletters. Besides, he has presented 13 papers at various national and international conferences.

Apart from this, he has been the Editor and member of various literary committees of PAU.He is a recipient of Farm Literature Popularization Award 2006-07 and 2007-08 by PAU for the popularization of farm literature.
