PAU observes world environment day; organises lectures and competitions

Ludhiana: The Department of Zoology, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, under the aegis of Zoological Society, celebrated the World Environment Day on the theme ‘Waste to Wealth’. Lectures were organized by inviting experts who deliberated on various aspects of a sustainable environment and the need to conserve our planet by managing our resources effectively. Dr Ashwani Kumar Soni, Senior Scientist, Department of Renewable Energy Engineering College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, spoke extensively on “Generation of electricity, biogas and combustible gas by utilization of agricultural waste” ; while Dr Neeraj Rani, Soil Chemist, School of Organic Farming, College of Agriculture, shared her intellectual discourse on “Solid Waste Management through composting and vermicomposting”.

The lectures were specifically aimed at creating awareness among students and faculty about the utilization of different types of kitchen and other wastes for preparation of biogas and composts. A Photography Competition on the theme ‘Waste to Wealth’ was also held for the undergraduate and postgraduate students of the College of Basic Sciences & Humanities. Ten students participated in the contest. Dr Neena Singla, Head of the Department, and Patron, Zoological Society, along with Dr Tejdeep Kaur Kler, President of the Zoological Society, also briefed about the importance of celebrating ‘Environment Day’; and protection and conservation of natural resources for the benefit of present and future generations.
