In order to draw the attention of students towards the importance of values and ethics in one's life, Amity Human Values Quarter - 2019 ( AHVQ) organized a panel discussion on the theme - Changing dimensions of Values and Ethics in the Contemporary Society on January 29, at Amity University, Noida. AHVQ is an annual event which commences from 28th January till 27th April. The prime objective of the program is to recapitulate the students about our cultural values and ethics. Sharing her views Dr. Sunita Singh, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Amity University said that values and ethics form the core of our lives. She asserted that being acquainted about our cultural values helps us in becoming a better human being and thus imparts value to our lives. Taking about the adverse effects of technology she said "Technology has taken a toll on our familial communication and has affected our relationships drastically we need to improve personal communication and interaction in order to stay connected. Venerable Thong Nien, A Theravada Buddhist Nun, discussed the various principles of Buddhism. Talking about the principles of Panchsheel she exclaimed that the youngsters should abide by the principles of Buddhism and to refrain from any kind of misconduct and spread peace, love and harmony among all. Ms. Neera Mishra, Chairperson, Draupati Trust, asserted that our values and ethics have been derived from the Vedic era and we must respect them. Talking about the transformation in the society she opined, “New rules develop but the core remain the same.” According to her family has a pivotal role to play in the ethical grooming of an individual. Giving an insight about the cultural shift, Dr. Smita Sahgal, Associate Professor, Department of History, Lady Shri Ram College expressed that there is a need to introspect our action and deeds. She suggested a few solutions to the problem of narcotics and cultural shifts in individuals which included – Meditation, Reflection and Compassion to be adopted by students. Ms. Sushma Jatu, Project Director, Naari Samvaad Prakalp, IGNCA cited the examples of Akka tribe and Max Muller to highlight the issue of humanism and to rejuvenate the Vedic cultures and ethics. A skit was presented by the students of Amity Institute of Social Work to highlight the effect of narcotics on the youth and spreading about the harmful effect on the youth as well as society.
