Panel discussion on novel entitled ‘Surakh Saaz’ by Jaswinder Singh
A panel discussion was organised today on the novel entitled ‘Surakh Saaz’ by Jaswinder Singh in the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Chandigarh, 7 May 2025: A panel discussion was organised today on the novel entitled ‘Surakh Saaz’ by Jaswinder Singh in the Department of Guru Nanak Sikh Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
During the discussion, Novelist Jaswinder Singh gave a detailed explanation and overview of his novels and shared his personal experiences with the audience. He said that this novel will create some insights and perspectives upon Punjabi society. Migration and displacement are new and furious problems of Punjab and Punjabi ethos, and the present novel reflects the whole society and societal complexes in its narratives.
In the panel discussion, Dr. Parveen Kumar, Dr. Harmail Singh, and Dr. Ravinder Dhaliwal shared their views. The main key points of the talk are Punjabi caste construct, feudal structure of the society, historical expressions, literary tradition, ethos, and new challenges before the society. The Chief Guest, Prof. Harsimran Singh Randhawa of Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, narrated the different features of the novel available in the home as well as in the diasporas.
In his presidential address, Dr. Manmohan said that the novel is an easy medium of expression of the novelist, social structure, political paraphernalia, economic paradigm, and mutual understanding, cooperation, and communication.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Prof. Gurpal Singh, Academic-in-Charge of the Department, introduced the main themes of the novel and spoke about the novelist. He said that a novel is a prolific way of conveying the message to the audience of all types, because it gives a spectacular picture of contrastive situations and circumstances of present-day human life.
Dr. Gurmukh Singh of Punjabi University, Patiala and Dr. Manjinder Singh of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar presented research papers on the different aspects of the theme of the novel. Both stressed the reflection of the psyche and ethos of Punjab and Punjabi people, culture, and society, which is comprehensively presented in the present novel.
On this occasion, Dr. Uma Sethi, Dr. Labh Singh Khieva, Dr. Rajesh Jaiswal, Dr. Dhanwant Kaur, Dr. Davinder Singh, Dr. Manjeet Kaur, Dr. Akwinder Kaur Tanvi, and many others attended the event and shared their views.
Many litterateurs, scholars, guests, and students participated in the event. The stage was conducted by Dr. Sukhwinder Singh.
