Meeting of research fellows of Rural Agriculture Weather Services Project at KVK, Noormahal

Ludhiana, march 28, 2017: The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana and the Indian Meteorological Department, Chandigarh, conducted a meeting of the research fellows of Rural Agriculture Weather Services Project at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Noormahal. Dr Surinderpal, Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh, graced the occasion with his presence. Dr P.S. Aulakh, Additional Director of Extension Education, PAU, was the chief guest. Dr S.S. Kukal, Additional Director of Research (Natural Resource and Plant Health Management), PAU and Dr Jagdish Kaur, Additional Director Communication, PAU, were also present. About 150 farmers and Agricultural Officers of various districts participated in the meet, which aimed at apprising them of important weather information.

Dr Aulakh called upon the farmers to remain attached with the PAU experts for fortifying agriculture, and take help of Krishi Vigyan Kendras for updating their knowledge on new crop varieties and technologies.

Dr Kukal gave detailed information about the project and urged the farmers to associate themselves with the agriculture weather services. Suggesting them to avail the benefit of weather services for farm development, he disclosed “Many farmers have been successful in saving their crops from natural calamities.”

Earlier, Dr Kuldeep Singh, Deputy Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Noormahal, welcomed the participants.

Mr PPS Pangli, Former President of PAU Kisan Club, urged the Director of IMD to enhance the weather network for accurate weather prediction.

The Agricultural Officers suggested passing on the weather information to the farmers of other areas as well.

Later, Dr Jagdish Kaur, while proposing the vote of thanks, stressed on conserving natural resources.

A technical session was also held on the occasion, in which Dr Prabhjot Kaur, PAU Agricultural Meteorologist, highlighted the importance of agriculture weather services and said through this, one can combat climate change challenges.

Dr K.K. Gill, Assistant Agricultural Meteorologist, discussed the activities being carried out under the project and threw light on communication tools to make information available to farmers. She urged the farmers to take full advantage of agriculture weather services by getting their phone numbers registered under SMS service of the project.

Dr Kuldeep Singh, a farm scientist, Research Station, Faridkot, informed the farmers about the significance of weather prediction for different crops.

An interactive session was also held among the farmers, scientists and the Agricultural Officers, wherein PAU experts addressed all the queries of the participants.
