MDU researchers get patent for Medicated Chewing Gum; Relief for those suffering from Motion Sickness

Rohtak, June 4, 2026: There is good news for people plagued by motion sickness—specifically, the problems of vomiting, nausea, and dizziness experienced while traveling by bus, train, or car.

Scientists at the Department of Pharmacy at MDU, Rohtak have developed a specialized medicated chewing gum to prevent motion sickness, for which they have been granted a patent by the Indian Patent Office. This patent was awarded for the collaborative research conducted by Prof. Deepak Kaushik (HoD of Pharmaceutical Sciences at MDU), Associate Professor Dr. Vineet Mittal, and former research scholar Dr. Prerna Kaushik.

The research team paid a courtesy visit to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Milap Punia and Registrar Prof. Sandeep Bansal, presenting them with the patent approval letter. The researchers attributed this success to the excellent research environment and administrative support available at the university.

Congratulating the research team on this achievement, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Milap Punia encouraged them to further accelerate socially relevant research and innovations in the future. He stated that the university is actively promoting research that offers direct solutions to the problems faced by the common people. He also encouraged the researchers to pursue funding projects and explore avenues for the commercialization of their technology.

Registrar Prof. Sandeep Bansal congratulated the researchers and expressed his confidence that this innovation would prove beneficial to society and open up new possibilities within the medical field.

Prof. Deepak Kaushik, Associate Professor Dr. Vineet Mittal, and former research scholar Dr. Prerna Kaushik explained that Promethazine—the medication typically used to treat motion sickness—has a very bitter taste, which often exacerbates the very symptoms of nausea and vomiting that patients are trying to alleviate. To address this specific issue, this medicated chewing gum has been formulated using a special taste-masking technology. The most significant feature of this chewing gum is that it requires no water for consumption. Travelers can conveniently use it anytime and anywhere while on a journey.

According to scientists, the very act of chewing gum is believed to help alleviate issues such as nausea and dizziness. The medication is absorbed directly into the body through the oral mucosa, ensuring a rapid onset of action without the need to pass through the stomach.

According to researchers, this technology will also prove beneficial for patients who experience difficulty swallowing medication. By utilizing modern taste-masking techniques and a natural gum base, the product has been made convenient for everyone—from children to the elderly. Experts believe that, in the future, this patented product could be commercially developed on a large scale, proving immensely beneficial for both travelers and patients.
