Rohtak, July 21, 2026: An awareness program on sarcoma and bone cancer was organized by the Department of Orthopaedics at the OPD of Pt. Bhagwat Dayal Sharma University of Health Sciences on Tuesday.
Speaking as the chief guest, Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agrawal stated that one should not ignore symptoms such as swelling in the bone, a lump appearing anywhere on the body, or persistent bone pain, as the lump could be cancerous. Without falling prey to any misconceptions, one should immediately consult a specialist doctor for an examination. Most patients recover completely with timely detection and appropriate treatment. He emphasized the need to convey the message to society that getting examined is crucial rather than giving in to fear.
Appreciating the students who explained the symptoms of sarcoma through a ‘Nukkad Natak’, Vice-Chancellor Dr. H.K. Agrawal noted that treatment for all types of cancer is available at PGIMS. He stated that the university administration is continuously striving to ensure that every patient in the state receives excellent diagnostic and treatment facilities under one roof.
The program was organized under the leadership of the Head of Department, Prof. Roop Singh. Dr. Ashish Devgan delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Umesh Yadav conducted the proceedings.
Registrar and Head of the Orthopaedics Department, Dr. Roop Singh, explained that sarcoma is a rare type of cancer. It accounts for approximately one percent of all cancers in adults and 15 to 20 percent of solid tumors in children. Since there are over a hundred varieties of sarcoma, treatment should be sought at a specialized center. The Registrar mentioned that the Orthopaedics Department at PGIMS is one of the state's leading centers for treating bone and soft tissue tumors, offering free surgeries for all types of tumors affecting the bones of the limbs and soft tissues.
During the event, patients who had recovered from sarcoma were felicitated, and winners of the poster competition were awarded prizes. On this occasion, Dental College Principal Dr. Manu Rathi, Head of the Sports Injury Medicine Department Dr. Rajesh Rohilla, Public Relations Department In-charge Dr. Manjunath BC, Dr. Sanjay Marwah, Dr. Alka, Dr. Sunil, Dr. Dimple, and Dr. Suman, along with students and citizens, were present.
