Man held for assaulting Delhi cop

New Delhi, July 13 (IANS) A 30-year-old scrap dealer has been arrested for assaulting a Delhi Police constable along with his associates here a month ago, police said Sunday.

Azad was arrested Saturday near Shastri Nagar Metro station in north Delhi.

"He was accused of beating constable Vijender Singh and robbing him of his mobile phone, which was recovered after his arrest," said Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Ravindra Yadav.

Yadav said Azad was joined by his friend Vickey and his family members, including a woman, when they beat up the constable.

Constable Vijender Singh, deputed at Sarai Rohilla police station in north Delhi, was on patrol duty on the intervening night of June 17-18 when he was attacked.

"The constable was attacked when he asked one of the accused to show the papers of the motorbike he was riding. The accused called his family members who attacked the policeman," Yadav said.

The police official said all the accused badly beat up Singh, tore his uniform and broke his wireless set before a police team reached there for his help.

"During the melee, Azad snatched the constable's mobile and fled," the official added.
