Ludhiana, September 19, 2013: The management of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital today announced the launching of ‘Operation Walk III - 2014’ for the conducting of free hip and knee replacements for poor patients. This follows the success of two previous editions of this project ‘Operation Walk 2011 and 2012’ in which 129 free joint replacements were carried out. This special charitable activity would be carried out by the faculty of department of Orthopaedics in association with a team from Operation Walk Maryland USA. Under this project, hip and knee joint replacement surgeries would be carried out totally free of cost including imported implants, medicines, consumables, hospital stay and food.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Prem Gupta, Secretary, Managing Society, DMCH said today that the overwhelming success of Operation Walk 2011 & 2012 had inspired the institution to continue this holy effort and provide poor patients with world class surgery. The patients who had been operated had shown remarkable benefit and many poor patients have now returned to their jobs following successful surgery. “Our mission to serve all the sections of the society to the best of our ability”, Gupta said.
Screening camps to select patients for this event would be held now in DMCH on September 22 and October 6 this year in outpatient department of Orthopaedics. Only those patients with disabling arthritis who are very poor and cannot afford surgery by themselves would be considered for free surgery. Those interested should come to these camps for checkup. DMCH will also organise these camps with the help of other charitable organisations in various parts of the state.
He added Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, a 1500 bedded hospital is involved in a number of charitable services for poor patients. Under NRHM programme, highly subsidised surgery for congenital heart disease has been carried out on more than 480 cases in the last three years. Many other free or highly subsidised activities have also benefitted the poor.
