Ludhiana, April 18, 2016: World Heritage Day was celebrated today in Ludhiana by architects from The Indian Institute of Architects – Punjab Chapter (IIAPC). Some of the Heritage buildings of Ludhiana that needs to be conserved include Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), Kos Minar, Mughal Serai, Doraha and PAU Museum.
UNESCO established 18th April as the International Day for Monuments and Sites in 1983.
Each year has a different theme, and the theme for 2016, looking ahead to the Olympics in Brazil, is The Heritage of Sport.
Ludhiana architects discussed the importance and value of the Heritage Buildings and the need to raise public awareness about the diversity and vulnerability of the world’s built monuments and heritage sites and the efforts required to protect and conserve them. They state:
From street buildings to old houses, our predecessors made their presence felt by varied ways they built enduring structures, regardless of whether those structures are ordinary or grand and luxurious!, old buildings document the finer aspirations and the most utilitarian solutions of those who preceded us. The buildings that have been passed down to us have, by their longevity, proven one aspect of their worth – durability along with their history.
Re-using old buildings is also an important part of a strategy to use resources wisely, and a contribution to sustainable development: ‘The most environment friendly building is the one that does not have to be built (because it already exists)’.
Hence it is our duty to conserve them. “We can't know where we're going until you know where we've come from.”
Ar. Sanjay Goel, Chairman IIA Punjab Chapter was the main speaker and event was attended by maximum office bearers and executive members of IIALC including Yogesh Singla, Harinder Boparai, Bimaldeep Singh, Niranjan Kumar, Rajan Tangri, Balbir Bagga, Harsharan Singh, Harpreet Kaur Dhillon, Sandip Grewal, Ankur Bhandari, Khushboo Raheja, Nidhi Raheja, Tarsem Goyal, Sumit Sharma, Gaganbir Singh and Rupleen Bhandari.
