Rohtak, June 24, 2026: To mark the 51st anniversary of the Emergency imposed during the Congress regime, the Bharatiya Janata Party will organize a state-level event on June 25 at the Tagore Auditorium of MDU, Rohtak, observing it as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'.
During the event, 'Loktantra Senanis' (Democracy Warriors)—those who struggled to protect democracy during the Emergency—and their families from 11 districts will be honored.
Speaking to journalists at the local Circuit House, BJP National Secretary Omprakash Dhankhar and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Bhatia shared the details of the program. They informed that Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat would be the chief guest, while Dr. Archana Gupta, the BJP's Haryana State President, would preside over the event. Former Minister Manish Kumar Grover, State Media Co-in-charge Shamsher Kharak, District In-charge Satendra Parmar, and other party office-bearers were also present on the occasion.
National Secretary Dhankhar stated that June 25, 1975, is a day in the history of Indian democracy that can never be forgotten. Following the Allahabad High Court's decision to set aside the election of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, an Emergency was imposed in the country, and unprecedented restrictions were placed on democratic institutions, civil rights, and freedom of expression. He remarked that the Emergency was not merely an attempt to suppress political opponents but a concerted attack on the Constitution, the judiciary, the press, and democratic values. Lakhs of people were imprisoned, censorship was imposed on the media, and the fundamental rights of citizens were effectively nullified.
He added that the choice of Rohtak for this event holds special historical significance. During the Emergency, several prominent national leaders—including stalwarts like L.K. Advani, Sikandar Bakht, and George Fernandes—were imprisoned in Rohtak Jail; thus, Rohtak is a fitting location to cherish the memories of that struggle for democracy.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Bhatia stated that the Central Government's decision—under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi—to observe June 25th annually as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day) is a significant step towards according national recognition to the struggles of 'Loktantra Senanis' (democracy warriors). He remarked that this day commemorates the sacrifices and struggles of the lakhs of citizens who endured severe hardships and torture to restore democracy. Protecting democracy is the responsibility of every citizen, not just political parties; such programs serve to strengthen democratic consciousness within society.
MP Bhatia emphasized that the new generation needs to understand that democracy is not a system obtained effortlessly; rather, it is the result of the struggles and sacrifices of many. The experiences and stories of the struggle waged by these democracy warriors serve as a source of inspiration for the youth.
BJP leaders informed that, in addition to Rohtak, programs marking 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' are being organized in Panchkula, Faridabad, and other districts across the state. These events will honor the democracy warriors and their families while shedding light on the events that transpired during the Emergency. They called upon intellectuals, youth, academicians, social activists, democracy warriors, and the general public to attend these programs in large numbers and reinforce the resolve to protect democracy. The program is scheduled to commence at 10:00 AM at the Tagore Auditorium of MDU.
