Jalandhar, December 6, 2025: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya (Autonomous) P.G. Department of Psychology successfully organised an insightful International Webinar on the timely and relevant topic, “Parental Socialisation to Competition and Coping with Winning and Losing in Cross-Cultural Perspectives.”
The session aligned with the institution’s commitment to fostering a globally aware and well-rounded academic environment. The webinar featured the highly distinguished speaker, Prof. Marta Fülöp, a globally acclaimed researcher specialising in cultural and competitive behaviour.
Prof. Fülöp currently serves as the Scientific Advisor and Head of the Social and Cultural Psychology Research Group at the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology, Hungarian Research Network (HUN-REN), and Karoli Gaspar University of the Reformed Church in Hungary. In her engaging address, Prof. Fülöp delved into the profound influence of parental practices across different cultures on children’s development of competitive attitudes. She provided deep, meaningful insights into how diverse family environments shape children’s strategies for coping with both success (winning) and failure (losing). She also discussed how the perceived value and ethics of competition differ significantly between individualistic (e.g., Western) and collectivistic (e.g., Eastern) societies & also highlighted the specific messages parents transmit—both verbally and non-verbally—about effort, talent, and the importance of victory versus participation.
The session was exceptionally well-received by the participating students, offering them a crucial cross-cultural lens through which to understand their own psychological responses to competition and performance.
Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi expressed profound appreciation for Prof. Fülöp’s scholarly contribution, emphasising that such international collaborations are vital for broadening the intellectual horizons of the students. KMV reaffirms its unwavering dedication to organising high-calibre academic events that provide students with global exposure and cutting-edge knowledge, preparing them to excel in a complex, interconnected world.
