Jalandhar, December 5, 2015: INSPIRE – A 5-day Science Camp being held at Kanya Maha Vidyalaya- The Heritage Institution, Jalandhar concluded successfully bidding adieu to 234 meritorious students from 34 schools all over Punjab. The Chief Guest of the Valedictory session Dr. Umesh Kumar, Scientist ‘E’, Dept. of Science & Technology, New Delhi and the Guests of Honour Dr. Aranya SB. Bhattacharya, School of Physical Science, JNU and Dr. Alex, St. Paul College, Kalamasserywere accorded floral felicitations on this occasion.
Dr. Umesh Kumar, detailed the present scholars about plethora of schemes being funded by Govt. of India to promote interest in various disciplines of sciences. He also told about some websites to follow for detailed information about scholarships, projects, fellowships being offered by various research institution, future avenues etc. for the budding scientists.
Earlier, the proceedings of the last day of INSPIRE Camp began with a talk delivered by Dr. A.S. Ahluwalia. Dept. of Botany, Punjab University, Chandigarh. He enlightened the scholars about ample research prospects in Botany, a branch of science that offers Nature’s bounties in its flora & fauna but so many species still remain unexplored by Man. The setting up of World Food Awards is a step towards motivation and recognition of such scientists who are working for the utilization of medicinal properties of known species for human wellness & wellbeing.
Dr. Avinash Kaur, Director HRDC, GNDU, in her career counselling session talked about various career options available in different branches of Science and upcoming fields like Microbiology, Bioinformatics etc. with tremendous research possibilities. A plethora of incentives await those who can work to get patents for their innovations to their credit.
An erudite resource person Dr. Dinesh Khurana, Dept. of Mathematics, Panjab University in a highly interactive manner, shared his views on the contribution of Indian mathematicians to the world of Science today. He illustrated the role of a mathematician who can devise various tests regarding Integers Numbers theory in ascertaining whether a number is prime or not, an area where even computers have proved to be a failure.
During Valedictory ceremony, all the participants were given away the certificates and quiz winners the prizes by the college Principal Prof. Atima Sharma. She congratulated all the campers wishing them for their bright glorious future and the organising committee on the successful culmination of the camp. The formal vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Parminder Kaur, Head, PG Department of Physics.
