Rohtak, September 27, 2023: The Institute of Hotel & Tourism Management (IHTM), MD University, joined the global community in celebrating World Tourism Day 2023 on Wednesday. This Year the day is dedicated to the theme "Tourism and Green Investments." This annual celebration, observed on September 27th, provides a platform to delve into the diverse facets of tourism while promoting safe, sustainable, and responsible travel practices.

Professor Ashish Dahiya, Director of IHTM said that established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly in 1980, World Tourism Day holds historical significance. The choice of September 27th marks the anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on September 27, 1970. The day serves several vital purposes. World Tourism Day underscores the global importance of tourism and raises awareness of its role in a country's social, cultural, and economic development. It highlights tourism's pivotal role in both developed and developing nations' economies, emphasizing its contribution to growth and employment. The event fosters a culture of sustainable tourism, seeking to mitigate the adverse effects of travel on the environment by advocating responsible and eco-friendly practices. World Tourism Day promotes tourism as a means of enhancing understanding, peace, and cooperation among nations through cultural exchange and diplomacy. It encourages the appreciation, honor, and promotion of the diverse cultures of the world, showcasing the rich tapestry of global heritage. The day serves as a platform to address the challenges and barriers in the tourism industry, facilitating discussions on preventive measures and sustainable solutions.

Professor Ashish Dahiya emphasized the significance of tourism as one of the key employment-generating sectors globally. He underscored the importance of being proud of India's rich heritage and culture, showcasing its culinary, arts, and hospitality. Prof. Dahiya highlighted that, according to the 3rd Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) study conducted by the Ministry of Tourism, the estimated share of tourism jobs in India during 2020-21 was 12.91%, urging youth to explore promising opportunities in this sector.

Officials from Axis Bank graced the occasion as Guests of Honor. Speaking on the occasion, Parveen Jaiswal emphasized the enormous potential in the MSME sector within Tourism & Hospitality, urging youth to explore entrepreneurship opportunities with the support of Axis Bank.

As part of the celebration, the Prime Minister of India's address on the significance of tourism was played. Dr. Anoop Kumar, Coordinator of the National Tourism Youth Club, MDU Chapter, introduced the students to the Travel for LIFE Program, which was launched at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi today. He spoke about Tourism Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Green Investments.

Dr. Shilpi encouraged a Plantation Drive to commemorate World Tourism Day at the IHTM Campus, while Dr. Jyoti and Dr. Sanjeev emphasized the importance of Responsible and Sustainable Tourism. A Tourism Pledge was taken by all faculty and students at IHTM, reaffirming their commitment to responsible tourism practices. Dr. Gaurav Tyagi proposed the Vote of Thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts in celebrating this significant day.
