Global Scholars Gather at PU to Honour Prof. Bambah’s Legacy in Mathematics

Chandigarh, October 2, 2025: The two-day International Conference on Algebra and Number Theory (ICANT-2025) concluded at the Department of Mathematics, Panjab University, Chandigarh, marking the centenary celebrations of eminent mathematician Professor R. P. Bambah.

Supported by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, the event was the department’s first international conference in over two decades.

The conference brought together leading mathematicians from across India and abroad to celebrate the life, scholarship, and legacy of Professor Bambah — widely recognised as a principal architect of the Punjab School of Mathematics. More than 120 participants attended the sessions, engaging in vibrant academic exchange.

The event commenced with an inaugural session graced by Professor Yojna Rawat, Dean University Instruction (DUI), Panjab University, as the Chief Guest. Over the two days, the conference featured 13 invited talks by eminent mathematicians, including Pace Nielsen (Brigham Young University, USA) and Prof. Radha Kessar (University of Manchester, UK).

In the valedictory session, Dr. Surinder Pal Singh Kainth, Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics, delivered the Vote of Thanks, extending gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, NBHM, distinguished speakers, colleagues, and staff. Reflecting on the emotional significance of the occasion, Dr. Kainth remarked: “Though Professor Bambah is no longer with us in person, his spirit, scholarship, and vision continue to illuminate our paths.”

The Department of Mathematics at Panjab University has a distinguished academic tradition, with four faculty members honoured with the CSIR–Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and five having served as Presidents of the Indian Mathematical Society. ICANT-2025, while serving as a tribute to Professor Bambah’s centenary, also reaffirmed the department’s role as a hub of mathematical excellence and a platform inspiring future generations of scholars.
