Chandigarh, July 18, 2025: Distinguished delegation from the Embassy of France in India today visited Panjab University’s Department of French and Francophone Studies. The visit was to  strengthen academic and cultural relations between the Department and French institutions, and at exploring potential avenues for long-term cooperation.

The delegation was led by Stéphanie Orfila, Attaché for Cooperation in Education, and Jatinder Singh, National Coordinator for Cooperation in French Language and Education. They were warmly welcomed by Prof. Yog Raj Angrish, Academic Incharge of the Department, along with faculty members and staff.

The visit facilitated meaningful dialogue on multiple areas of prospective collaboration, including the student and faculty exchange programmes, strengthening of French language pedagogy, teacher training initiatives and joint organisation of academic and cultural events.

The delegation was also taken on a guided tour of the department’s classrooms, library, and other academic facilities. Their interaction with faculty members offered them an opportunity to witness the department’s dynamic learning environment and the increasing enthusiasm for French language and culture in the region.

In their remarks, the Embassy representatives expressed strong interest in enhancing Indo-French academic cooperation and lauded the department’s consistent efforts in advancing French studies. Highlighting the long-term benefits of such collaborative exchanges, Prof. Yog Raj Angrish also proposed the introduction of a Diploma Programme in Translation, with a special focus on translating texts from French into Indian vernacular languages, particularly Hindi and Punjabi. The initiative aims to promote cross-cultural understanding and to make Francophone literature and knowledge more accessible to regional audiences.

This visit marks a significant milestone in reinforcing institutional partnerships and expanding the presence of Francophone culture in Chandigarh and beyond.
