Ludhiana, September 18, 2023: Dr. Gurbachan Singh Miglani's latest book, "Epigenomics," was unveiled at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, by Dr. Satbir Singh Gosal, the Vice-Chancellor, alongside university officers. This book delves into the intricate world of epigenetics, providing readers with a comprehensive understanding of genome-wide epigenetic analysis, including DNA and histone modifications, RNA alterations, and non-coding RNAs.

In his remarks, Dr. Gosal commended Dr. Miglani's work and recommended "Fundamentals of Epigenetics" for those new to the field. "Epigenomics" caters to undergraduates, graduates, teachers, and researchers in life sciences, agriculture, medicine, and biotechnology, emphasizing the critical role of epigenetics in gene expression regulation.

Dr. Gosal noted that "Epigenomics" covers a wide array of epigenetic mechanisms, discussing topics like epigenetic profiling, landscape mapping, and epigenomes across various organisms, including crops such as rice, wheat, maize, as well as humans and Drosophila. The book also explores cutting-edge areas like epigenome editing, RNA editing, epitranscriptomics, and the practical applications of epigenomic discoveries.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed the pivotal role of epigenomics in comprehending gene expression regulation without altering DNA sequences. He highlighted its potential in enhancing crop yields and advancing treatments for human diseases, particularly cancer. "Epigenomics" champions the concept of "epibreeding," a molecular approach that modernizes crop breeding by capitalizing on phenotypic variations unrelated to DNA sequence changes, he added.

Dr. Gurbachan Singh Miglani, the book's author, shared insights into its significance. He explained that epigenomics involves the intricate realm of chemical modifications on DNA and histones, crucial for regulating gene expression. These reversible epigenetic modifications govern gene activity without altering the underlying DNA sequence. Dr. Miglani elaborated on mechanisms like DNA methylation, histone modifications, RNA changes, and small RNAs, all of which collectively control gene expression and influence critical processes like growth and evolution.

Recognizing the growing importance of epigenomics in deciphering human diseases and advancing crop breeding, Dr. Miglani emphasized the integration of epigenetics and epigenomics into global educational curricula. His motivation for writing "Epigenomics" was to provide a comprehensive, reader-friendly exploration of epigenomic concepts, principles, techniques, developments, and practical applications.

Dr. Parveen Chhuneja, Director of the School of Agricultural Biotechnology, introduced Dr. Gurbachan S. Miglani, a distinguished geneticist. He retired in 2005 after 35 years as a Professor of Genetics at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Dr. Miglani's career included teaching genetics, biotechnology, and various genetic disciplines to undergraduates and graduates. He also taught genetics and zoology as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Howard University in Washington, D.C., USA. Post-retirement, he continued contributing to academia as an Adjunct Professor and later as a Visiting Professor at PAU. Dr. Chhuneja expressed confidence that "Epigenomics" would significantly benefit students preparing for competitive exams and job interviews, serving as a valuable resource for those seeking a deeper understanding of this evolving field.
